Sears Donates $20,000 for Tornado Relief Services

Funding, Clothes and Toys Contributed by Retailer

Sears, Roebuck and Co. (NYSE: S) pledged $20,000 in cash, clothing and toy donations to help local residents recover from Saturday's devastating tornado.

Sears has presented the American Red Cross' National Disaster Relief Fund with a $10,000 donation to aid in disaster recovery services. In addition, Sears is donating $10,000 (retail value) of new clothes and toys to the Coates Bend Volunteer Fire Department. The toy donations are from Sears Wishbook.

"Sears is proud to be a leader in responding to disasters nationally and in local communities like Gadsden," explained Jim Byrnes, Sears store general manager in Gadsden. "Responding to community needs is a priority for Sears. It's our chance to demonstrate our support for families in our communities."

"The American Red Cross is grateful for Sears continued leadership," reported Dr. John Clizbe, vice president -- disaster services, American Red Cross. "This support from Sears is essential in helping us fulfill our mission as we respond to disasters around the country."

Sears also has shipped additional clothing donations to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to assist in recovery services in the region.

Sears is a national sponsor of the American Red Cross, donating $1 million over five years to disaster relief services throughout the nation. Last year, Sears and its associates, along with The Sears-Roebuck Foundation, contributed nearly $30 million in funding and merchandise to a variety of family-focused health, human service, education and other civic organizations nationwide. In addition, Sears associates and their families provided more than 275,000 hours of volunteer service for community projects throughout the country.
