Sears.Com Leads Clicks and Bricks Department Stores in March Media Metrix Ranking of Unique Visitors

Sears.com leads clicks and bricks department stores in March, based on the number of unique visitors to the e-commerce site for Sears, Roebuck and Co. (NYSE: S). According to the Media Metrix Digital Media Audience Report, sears.com also experienced the biggest percent increase within the retail department store category, showing a 43.7 percent increase among unique visitors from February 2001 to March 2001.

Media Metrix, Inc., the leader and pioneer in Internet and Digital Media measurement worldwide, reports that in March sears.com led the "department store" retail category by attracting 3.842 million unique visitors, followed by JCPenney.com with 2.903 million, Bluelight.com with 2.802 million and Walmart.com with 2.313 million.

Media Metrix reports that sears.com also led the "department store" retail category in February by attracting 2.673 million unique visitors, followed by Bluelight.com with 2.584 million, Walmart.com with 2.343 million, and JCPenney.com with 2.279 million.

The number of unique visitors to sears.com has grown steadily. "Shoppers are embracing the Sears clicks and bricks business, researching and buying online, as well as researching online and buying in Sears stores," said Joe Charno, vice president of Sears Online management and marketing. "Our studies show that sears.com influences approximately one in 10 major appliance purchases made in Sears stores. Considering that Sears sells more appliances than any other U.S. retailer, that's a lot of influence. So far, for home electronics and lawn and garden equipment, two categories we've offered online for a year or less, sears.com appears to influence about one in 20 purchases made in Sears stores."

"Unique visitors" are people who click onto a site at least once during the month. Multiple site visits by the same person count only once. Sears.com focuses on solutions for the home, carrying lawn and garden equipment, tools, major and small appliances, cookware, home electronics and home office equipment. Sears.com also carries fitness equipment, an assortment of baby products and school uniforms. This spring, sears.com added patio furniture to its lawn and garden offering, and enhanced its online store locator.
